Bramel apartment
New York, NY

Located in Manhattan's Upper West Side, the Bramel residence is a combination apartment renovation joining two one-bedroom apartments together. The wall separating the two apartments was removed and replaced by a floating wall surrounded by translucent resin sliding wall panels. These panels create a 'glass' corner allowing light to flood into the entire apartment. When there are no guests or visitors these panels can remain open to create a much larger and more flexible living space. A unique feature of the apartment is the incorporation of two hundred year old antique doors from France. The offset of glossy white lacquer cabinets with the old rustic antique doors creates an incredible warmth and richness within the apartment. The same resin material was used in some of the kitchen cabinet doors that were lit from inside to give a warm glow sensation. The kitchen stone floor pattern is based on the density of use where areas that are used more frequently (i.e. in front of the sink and cooktop) have smaller tile sizes then areas used less frequently. This type of 'performance' based material use is used in other areas of the project to allow for multiple functions within a single environment. The project had a budget of $150,000 and was completed in January of 2006.
